Having never been a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, I am surprised to find the current movement of choosing a word to focus on for the year something I want to grab on to. If you haven’t jumped on this band wagon yet, let me give you a little inspiration.

For me personally, I chose to just pray and ask what my word should be this year. Instantly, the word I heard was “TRUST”. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that my initial response was “Really, seriously? That just doesn’t sound very exciting”. So I set it aside for a few hours.
The next morning early, as I was laying in bed, but not actually sleeping, a scripture came to mind. ‘Put your trust in God and do not be afraid’. Well, that woke me up a bit. I became aware of things I have been worrying about rather than trusting God for. To get myself back to sleep I just kept saying that verse over and over, and it didn’t take long before I was sleeping soundly again.
When I actually got my butt out of bed that morning, I decided to start a word search on the Bible Gateway website for the word “trust”, and the phrase “put trust in” in the Bible. I got much more enthusiastic about my word when I read the verses that came up in the search. Suddenly this simple word was coming to life in phrases that resonated with me.
Lots of verses popped up in the Psalms. I think David must have really struggled with fear, and he was really good at journaling. Psalm 3:3, 4:5, 9:10, 13:5, 21:7 and 62:8 are all verses I’ve written in my journal to fill my TRUST arsenal. I know there’s more. I’m not done with my word study yet.
The verse that had come to mind during the night (although I had it turned around a little) was actually Psalm 56:3 “When I am afraid I put my trust in You”.
Another one I really like is Psalm 62:8 “Trust in Him at all times, O people. Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refugee for us.”
If you’ve read my About Page, you will have read that I volunteer with the Oregon Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America. Last December we packed boxes and shipped them to our sons and daughters and some of their friends. A couple of the women have sons who are deployed in some places on the planet that are . . . well . . . let’s just say, it’s not a vacation. These moms struggle with very real and strong fears for their children’s safety and welfare.
I listened to a couple of them tell about the situations their kids are in (or at least as much as they know and can talk about), and it was very sobering and humbling. Both these moms know their sons love what they are doing. They also know that it’s dangerous, but it is what their sons want to be doing. Both moms are amazed at the character of their sons and the things they are accomplishing. What a bittersweet mixture that is!
Back in 2009, when I was first considering creating a line of greeting cards for military families to encourage their Airmen, Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Coasties, I started talking with the people closest to me who are serving or have served in the military. I remember talking with a high school classmate who is a Marine, and served in Desert Storm. He told me about how in the face of combat the Marine Corps instruction was so drilled into him that he didn’t think twice about how to rely on his weapons, tactical training, and his fellow Marines. He had complete trust in all three of those things.
There isn’t boot camp training for the families though, is there? I think that’s why the facebook groups of Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard families are so popular. Moms, dads, wives and husbands (and even siblings) need desperately to find support. They need help traveling the tough road of military life alongside their Sailor, Soldier, Airman, Marine or Coastie. In particular, the closed Facebook groups where confidentiality is protected, are incredibly important and helpful.
Mom’s and wives who share their experiences through blog posts help tremendously the new moms and wives who are trying to figure out this new realm. One that I follow is Military Wife and Mom by Lauren Tamm. She writes about real life struggles and lessons in ways that are easy to read and give you tangible ideas to put to use. I trust her perspective.
The theme of TRUST, and specifically in the face of fear, will come up again this year. I have a Deployment collection in the works, and I hope that it will help you encourage your military someone wherever they are deployed or stationed.
